Tasting notes

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, March 2021 100

Welcome to one of the most beautiful faces of the Mosel. Essence of yellow fruit, from peach through mango to papaya. So concentrated, yet so vibrant and so pristine with such a mind-boggling number of nuances that your nervous system is pushed to the limit, in the nicest possible way. The generous sweetness is already well integrated, but this is made for the many decades to come. Drinkable now, but better from 2025.

Stephan Reinhardt, RobertParker.com (251), October 2020 97

The 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Gold Capsule) is very clear and fine on the floral and highly delicate nose. Piquant and fresh on the palate, this is a concentrated, fresh and salty, straight and precise Auslese with concise acidity and lemon chutney notes on the piquant and grippy finish. Far too young but with the finesse and irresistible charm of the Sonnenuhr. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. Drink 2035-2070.

Jean Fisch & David Rayer, Mosel Fine Wines (54), November 2019 96

The 2019er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese GK is a noble-sweet wine with a comparatively rich and aromatic yet superbly complex nose of honey, pear, passion fruit, quince, dried apricot, orange peel, guava, roasted pineapple, and buttery cream. The wine is still on the sweet and honeyed side on the palate at this early stage and will clearly need more than a decade to reveal al its nuances. But the multi-layered, elegantly smooth, and rich finish already hints already at greatness to come. 2034-2069
