Tasting notes

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (153), June 2004 93

This estate continues to merit substantial praise. Let’s hope in the upcoming revised Classification of the Wines of St.-Emilion, Troplong Mondot merits elevation to Premier Grand Cru Classe, which it has deserved for some time. Not far off the pace of the spectacular 2000, the 2001 is performing even better from bottle than it was from cask. A gorgeous perfume of plum jam, creme de cassis, flowers, licorice, black fruits, a hint of graphite, and well-integrated wood notes is followed by a medium to full-bodied St.-Emilion with superb texture, great flavor purity, and tremendous harmony as well as elegance. Remarkably approachable despite its impressive concentration and well-concealed tannin, this is a beauty. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2017.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, October 2007 16.5

Healthy crimson. Sweet, round and winning. No hard edges and the tannins are very well managed – though definitely there! Not massive not massively ambitious but acceptable. Neat but not very subtle or rewarding.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (146), April 2003 90/92

This opaque ruby/purple-colored St.-Emilion exhibits gorgeously pure black fruits intertwined with licorice, minerals, violets, and toasty new oak. Extremely concentrated for the vintage, this medium-bodied, pure, perfumed Troplong Mondot has turned out brilliantly. The tannin, acidity, and wood are all handsomely integrated into what is undeniably one of the vintage's most successful wines. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018.
