Rivesaltes, L'Archiviste 1955

The 1955 Rivesaltes has a more rancio character than other vintages with marmalade, sandalwood, pressed flowers and a little more VA than younger editions. The palate is beautifully balanced with acidity to counter its richer style. Very harmonious and lightly tangy, the 1955 offers fig, marmalade, hints of peach and apricot, fanning out beautifully on the finish with a note of white pepper. At 70 years old, this is just magnificent. Drink 2025-2045.

Used to be Château de Villargeil. From a single private domaine whose last vintage was 1958.Pale greenish tawny. A bit dusty and too concentrated. Too much concentration and astringency for me (it reminded me too much of too-old sherries from cask), although it was the favourite of some other tasters. (JR)
