Tasting notes

William Kelley, Wine Advocate, March 2025 93

The 2022 Moulin St Georges has turned out nicely, retaining its bright, vibrant signature despite the warmth of the vintage. Offering up aromas of cherries, berries, bay leaf and a deft touch of toasty oak, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, with good density and cut and a penetrating, mineral finish. It's produced from a seven-hectare, west-facing vineyard opposite Ausone that always ripens some 10 days later than Ausone itself. 2030 - 2055

Neal Martin, vinous.com, February 2025 92

The 2022 Moulin Saint-Georges has really opened up on the nose since tasting from barrel. It's plusher and opulent than it showed then, with layers of black cherry, cassis fruit, orange pith and glycerine. The palate is medium-bodied and velvety smooth, with lush tannins and a dash of cracked black pepper on the finish. There is structure and sapidity here. This is a stylish Moulin Saint-Georges that should age well. 2028 - 2045

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, April 2023 94/95

Fresh and framed with a juiciness but also a coolness and brightness. Medium to full body. Very balanced. Well done. Lower pH at 3.52. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Independent, May 2023 92/94

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Moulin Saint-Georges has a deep garnet-purple color. It bursts with bombastic scents of juicy black plums, blueberry pie, and warm cassis, leading to touches of cedar chest, menthol, and lavender. Big, rich, and full-bodied in the mouth, the palate is completely coated with black and blue fruits, supported by firm, velvety tannins, finishing long and decadent. It will need some time to come round, but promises to be a blockbuster!

Jane Anson, JaneAnson.com, March 2025 95

This has the joy of 2022 with the depth of Moulin St Georges, salty, saline, oyster shell, juicy, crushed rocks, coffee, cocoa bean, liquorice, espresso, saffron and sage. 100% new oak. Harvest September 19 to 26. A buy, wonderful stuff from the team at Ausone.

James Lawther MW, JancisRobinson.com, May 2023 16.5

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample.Dense and concentrated but fresh at the same time. A lick of vanilla oak on the nose and palate but not excessive and should integrate. Finely honed tannins. (JL) 14.5%Drink 2028– 2040

William Kelley, Wine Advocate, April 2023 90/92+

Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries, violets and creamy new oak, the 2022 Moulin St Georges is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with powdery tannins and a taut, chalky profile. It should flesh out further with additional élevage.

Neal Martin, vinous.com, May 2023 90/92

The 2022 Moulin Saint-Georges was picked 19 to 26 September and is aged for 18 months in French oak. Black cherries and bilberry fruit, oyster shell and light cedar scents on the nose, it just needs to knit together during its élevage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, lightly spiced on the entry, then quite linear with a dash of black pepper on its quite graphite-tinged, linear finish. Needs a bit more éclat.

Jane Anson, JaneAnson.com, May 2023 95

A luxurious feel, with velvety tannins, enjoyable ripe black fruits, gourmet touches of smoked vanilla root and liqourice, all well drawn out through the palate, and providing plenty of estate signature. A well balanced luscious wien with a saline limestone twist. 3.55ph, 100% new oak. 28hl/h yield, smaller than across the rest of the Ausone range because of 50 year old vines planted almost entirely by Alain Vauthier when he arrived 1970. Harvest September 19 to 26.
