Tasting notes

Neal Martin, vinous.com, March 2021 93

The 2018 Moulin Saint-Georges has a broody, introspective bouquet, so I allowed it 90–120 minutes to open. It reveals enticing blackberry, seaweed and light graphite notes with aeration, perhaps a little more sophisticated than recent vintages of the Vauthier family’s estate. The immediate impression on the palate is the texture, which is satin-like and very harmonious. Veins of blue fruit infuse the black, and blood orange surfaces toward the finish, which is almost Burgundy in style. A wonderful Moulin Saint-Georges that will be difficult to resist. 2023-2040

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, April 2019 92/93

This shows brightness and firmness with lovely tannin and acidity balance to the ripe fruit. Racy at the end.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate, March 2021 93+

Composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Moulin Saint-Georges has a medium to deep garnet-purple color, rolling effortlessly out of the glass with notes of black cherry compote, blueberry preserves and ripe plum, plus touches of pencil shavings and fallen leaves. The medium-bodied palate is coated with crunchy black fruits, supported by a racy line and just enough textural friction, finishing long and savory. It's delicious right now, but I suspect 5-7 years of cellaring is going to reveal a whole other pleasure level. Drink: 2023-2040

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, February 2022 16

Tasted blind. A bit of Cabernet fragrance on the nose. Sweet and mellow on the palate. One of the few St-Émilions in this tasting of which I wondered whether there was enough tannin. Grainy texture on the end. 14%Drink 2026 – 2040

Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2019 16

Black core. Dark-fruited with ripe cassis, spicy. Juicy and fresh on the palate, packed with fruit and nicely smooth tannins even though they are powerful. Juicier and fresher than the Ch Simard. Well balanced and so much fruit. Just a bit charry on the finish, a hint of burnt toast at the very end.Drink 2023-2028

Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com, May 2019 92/94

A blend of 80/20 Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Château Moulin Saint-Georges comes from a vineyard just down the slope from Ausone, on the southern side of the village of Saint-Émilion. It’s a beautiful wine that has a smoky, dark-fruited style as well as notes of crushed rocks, white truffle, cedar, and spice. Medium to full-bodied, balanced, and lightly textured on the palate, it shines for both its complexity and elegance, and will drink nicely for two decades or more.

Matthew Jukes, MatthewJukes.com, April 2019 17+

(80 Merlot, 20 Cabernet Franc) | 100% new oak for 18 months | The Merlot was harvested on 28th September and 1st October and the Cabernet Franc was harvested on the 9th October This is a wonderfully complete wine with freshness and depth and also a lovely lifted perfume. The palate is not too tense and so it is easy to appreciate the black fruit and the finish is long and fine, without being too dry or hard. The oak, while powerful, is very well integrated in this wine.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (April 2019), April 2019 92/94

Blended of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Moulin Saint-Georges is deep purple-black colored and opens slowly to display notions of sautéed herbs, menthol and pencil shavings over a core of chocolate-covered cherries, baked plums and cedar plus a waft of potpourri. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegantly played with lively, juicy fruit framed by plush tannins and finishes with a floral skip in its step.
