Tasting notes

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Independent, June 2024 91

A blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, the 2012 Montlandrie is deep garnet in color, with a touch of brick. After a swirl or two, the nose explodes with an array of exotic spice and fragrant earth scents, giving way to a core of redcurrant jelly and plum preserves, followed by waves of menthol and rose oil nuances. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is plush with just enough tension to counter the evolving black fruit preserves and spicy layers, finishing on a lingering anise note.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (206), April 2013 87/88

From proprietor Denis Durantou, this excellent Castillon exhibits layers of black cherry and black raspberry fruit intertwined with notions of spring flowers, toast and lead pencil shavings. Medium-bodied, supple, round and generous, it is ideal for drinking over the next 5-7 years.

Neal Martin, RobertParker.com, May 2014 88/90

The Montlandrie was picked between 9th and 12 of October, a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc aged in 50% new oak. The bouquet is more sedate and more reserved than the Les Cruzelles or La Chenade at this stage – you have to coax out the aromas more. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, quite supple tannins. The acidity is just about perfect and there is great poise on the grippy, saline finish. Fine. Tasted April 2013.

Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2013 16

75% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, on clay and limestone. Restrained on the nose with just a touch of cassis. Dark and dry on the palate, firm and savoury and not very giving but has a rather attractive severity. Firm, dry finish.

James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, February 2015 89

Solid, with a brambly spine driving the dark plum and raspberry fruit flavors along, while licorice snap and fruitcake notes fill in on the finish. Shows a judicious hint of roasted apple wood. Drink now through 2017. 2,500 cases made

Derek Smedley MW, April 2013 90/92

The mix of black fruits on the nose are fresh an autumn hedgerow mix. Ripe black plum gives richness and depth on the mid palate the fruit supported by firm but ripe tannins. The layers of flavour give complexity with the sweetness of the fruit filling out the finish. 2016-26.

Tim Atkin MW, timatkin.com, April 2013 92

Denis Durantou says he works as hard on his lesser wines as he does on L'Eglise-Clinet, and it shows. This is a dense wine for the price, with plump, sweet fruit, a hint of firmness on the finish, scented oak and the concentration to age. If you can't afford L'Eglise-Clinet, this isn't a bad alternative. Drink: 2018-25
