Tasting notes

The 2007 Lafaurie-Peyraguey is one delicious Sauternes. It was picked over seven tries through the vineyard. It bursts from the glass with wild honey, mirabelle, vanilla pod and yellow flower scents displaying impressive intensity and delineation. As I commented with respect to previous bottles, there is Barsac-like personality to the 2007. The very pure palate presents a honeyed texture, more botrytized fruit than the 2006, and quince, barley sugar, Seville orange marmalade and almond notes that dovetail into a citrus-fresh finish. Superb. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at home.

Thick and rich, with lots of dried pineapple and honey character. Full-bodied, medium sweet, with some spice and a long finish. Powerful. 91 -94

Mid honeyed gold. Hint of veg but nothing desperately eloquent on the nose. Big and round and very sweet with lots of rather green acidity. Falls away a bit sharply. A bit tired

It is sticky sweet on the nose lacking an underlying freshness. The sweetness is very apparent on the palate, overpoweringly sticky sweet, blowsy fat with a lack of structure. Some fresher flavours do come through towards the back but not enough to give the much needed balance

Top Sauternes of the decade. Fairly closed but intense nose. Full, sauve texture; notes of confit fruit and crème brulee. Zesty on the palate with a long, minerally finish.

The sample was cloudy and the nose not quite in focus, but the very fresh acidity is positive. There is great sweetness but also purity and breed, but it is not quite together yet. The rating could go higher once the wine comes into focus. 4 stars.

Tasted single blind against its peers. This is another Sauternes that is evolving beautifully in bottle. Initially it is rather closed on the nose with touches of lemon curd, apple-blossom and fresh pears. The palate is well-balanced with good acidity, and it is imbued with a femininity and poise. Though it is tighter compared to its peers at the moment, it is sure to give immense pleasure down the line. Could this be as great as the 1986?or even greater? Drink 2014-2045.

The 2007 Lafaurie-Peyraguey has fulfilled all my expectations since its impressive primeur showing. It is has a light, succinct nose with white peach, pear, apple-blossom and a touch of chalk dust. Good definition, although it needs a little more vitality. The palate is superb: very vibrant on the entry, marmalade, quince, mandarin and a touch of ginger, just a little disjointed towards the finish, good length. Time in bottle will allow this to coalesce. Drink 2014-2030.

This is another very primal, honeyed nose that is still a little yeasty but there appears to be good fruit concentration with honey, mango and apricot. The palate is displaying very good delineation and minerality, very vibrant and focused with a crisp, zest finish. Good level of botrytis towards the finish, very good length. Very fine. Drink 2012-2030. Tasted April 2008
