Tasting notes

Neal Martin, vinous.com, March 2019 97

The 2009 Guiraud is one of the gems of Sauternes this vintage, one of the finest offerings in recent years. It has a wonderful, beautifully delineated bouquet with expressive scents of wild honey, orange pith, Seville orange marmalade and just a hint of pineapple. The palate is beautifully defined with pure botrytised fruit, supremely well balanced with a vivacious, ginger and white pepper tinged finish that lingers long in the mouth. Outstanding. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. 2019 - 2055

James Suckling, WineSpectator.com, April 2010 95/98

This rocks with botrytis, offering spicy almond, peach pie and dried apricot on the nose and palate. Full and very sweet, with a long finish. So much dried fruit. Oily and powerful. Some bitterness. 35 percent Sauvignon Blanc and 65 percent Sémillon.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (March 2019), March 2019 94

Pale to medium gold colored, the 2009 Guiraud comes sashaying out of the glass with a wonderfully floral nose of jasmine and peach blossoms with an undercurrent of potpourri, dried mango, honey nut, baked pineapple and preserved ginger. The mouth is completely coated with concentrated baking spice and savory layers countering all the rich sweetness, finishing long and layered. 2019 - 2035

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2010 18

Interesting nose with a bit of an edge - really appetising as well as very sweet. I failed to spit this one - always a good sign. Very long and a good combination of structure, acidity and very ripe fruit. Tightly laced even if not the sweetest. Interesting smokiness on the nose. Date tasted 29th March 2010. Drink 2018-2035.

Derek Smedley MW, April 2010 91/95

The nose is fleshed out by a mix of ripe fruits with apricot and peach very much to the fore. Citrus peel adds freshness and helps to give complexity. The lush ripe fruit enriches the palate but there is fresh apple backed by lime that lifts the fruit. The finish though is lovely and succulent. Drink 2020-2050.

Tim Atkin MW, April 2010 97

The freshness of the Sauvignon Blanc is what makes this wine so bright and harmonious. Overall, the blend is waxy, toasty and stylish, with oak, vanilla spice and honeysuckle and grapefruit characters combining stylishly on the palate. Not far behind Yquem in 2009, and that is high praise indeed. Long, elegant and refreshing. Residual sugar 139 grams per litre. 10+ years.

James Lawther MW, Decanter.com, April 2010 18.5

Great pure noble rot aromas (apricot, mango), huge body, huge liquor, monumental but silky and supremely elegant, immense length, a great classic of the vintage in preparation and not at all very far from Yquem level, as are some other first growths too.

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (207), June 2013 96

Tasted as part of a vertical held at the chateau. The 2009 Guiraud has a complex, precocious bouquet with honeysuckle and jasmine notes, hints of dried honey and white peach. It is tightly wound but very precise. The palate is pure and tense in the mouth - great precision here once again with superbly integrated oak and a lovely, seductive, very viscous botrytis-laden finish. In many ways the 2009 represents the wine that every vintage since 1983 would love to be. Drink 2018-2040+ Tasted April 2013.

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (205), March 2013 96

The Guiraud is one of the outstanding successes of the 2009 vintage, perhaps the best vintage that I have encountered in recent years. It is blessed with a very pretty, candied nose with coconut, almond shavings and clear honey that is very well-defined, although there remains just a little oak to be subsumed over the next couple of years. The palate is medium-bodied with a lovely, joyful apricot and clementine-infused entry. The acidity is perfectly judged while the finish exudes breeding, tension and precision. Outstanding! Drink now-2040+

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (188), April 2010 94/96

The 2009 Guiraud is very tight on the nose, taking time to unfurl, with notes of apricot, peach, a touch of honeysuckle and quince. Good definition. The palate is impressive: tightly coiled, honeyed fruit, very fine acidity, linear at first then fanning out across the finish with notes of dried apricot, nectarine, a touch of almond and a faint hint of spice. With good length and unctuous on the finish, this Guiraud is impossible to ignore.
