Tasting notes

James Suckling, Wine Spectator Weekly, May 2003 98

Smells like freshly picked orchids, with loads of ripe, clean fruit. Full-bodied, medium sweet and very powerful and racy. It lasts for minutes on your palate. Yet there's a balance and class to this young Vintage Port. This is the greatest glass of Graham I have ever tasted, young or old. Best after 2014. 9,000 cases made.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (143), October 2002 94

Grapy, unformed, black raspberry liqueur and licorice-infused cassis notes leap from the glass of this opaque purple-colored wine. Sweet, plush, rich, and accessible, it is a forward, lush, concentrated effort that should drink well for two decades. While not one of Graham's most profound ports, it should evolve rapidly, providing immense crowd appeal.

Stephen Tanzer, January 2003 94

Saturated black-ruby. Superripe, bottomless nose of black fruits, mocha, bitter chocolate and flowers. Hugely sweet, dense and rich. A port of outstanding opulence and creamy texture; deceptively easy to taste. Substantial, sweet, spreading tannins are buried under a wave of fruit. Extremely long, fruit-driven finish.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, December 2012 18.5

Dark crimson with a slightly weak rim. Rich, slightly volatile, evolved nose. Polished and dense and explosive. Interesting contrast with Noval 2000. More of a Fonseca style in its opulence. Lots of fun! Great richness. I would love to discover this in fact comes from somewhere other than Portugal! Complete. Drink 2015-2040.

Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com, September 2021 19

So young! Hardly any signs of bottle age here, with the primary red fruit still going full throttle. Brilliantly balanced. Super-rich and thick. Most likely immortal. Drink 2020-2068.

James Suckling, Wine Spectator, May 2002 95/100

One of the wines of the vintage. Already close to 100 points. Concentrated, intense crushed berry aromas with hints of blackberries and cherries. Full-bodied, round and sweet, with velvety tannins and a long, sweet-fruit finish. Goes on and on. Great young vintage of Graham, even better than 1997 and 1994. Perhaps better than the legendary 1948?
