Tasting notes

Neal Martin, vinous.com, February 2024 94

The 2010 Coutet demanded some coaxing like the 2009, eventually offering sensual aromas of honeysuckle, jasmine and quince, although I feel the 2009 has a greater presence. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, fresh and focused with commendable weight. There is a deft touch of spice here and superb tension on the finish - a quintessential Coutet. Tasted from an ex-château bottle served at the estate. (Drink between 2021-2045)

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (March 2020), March 2020 91

Medium lemon-gold colored, the 2010 Coutet is relatively evolved, revealing honey nut, ginger ale and baked peaches scents with touches of straw, fresh figs, quince paste and nutmeg. The palate is considerably more mature than when I last reviewed this wine a couple of years age, so I suspect this bottle may have been slightly oxidized, nonetheless it offers loads of nutty nuances accenting the dried fruits, finishing deliciously spicy. 2020 - 2030.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2011 18

Smudgy and interesting, already, on the nose. Lots of richness and smoothness. Really. This approaches the idea of a classic vintage with its density and concentration. Long. Very fine. RS 156 g/l, TA 4.2. 14%

Derek Smedley MW, April 2011 90/94

It is sensuously rich with a mass of apricots and peaches quite exotic. The powerful mix enriches the palate layers of flavours. There is freshness at the back a touch of grapefruit but it is the fruit sweetness that enriches the back palate.

Michel Bettane, Decanter.com, April 2011 19

Perfect balance, lots of class, super-refined texture, great length, great wine: purity and power! Drink 2020-2040.

Neal Martin, vinous.com, April 2020 95

The 2010 Coutet has quite an intense bouquet with linseed oil and wax resin infusing the dried honey aromas, then orange pith and a touch of saffron. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Harmonious and extremely well focused, this conveys a sense of energy on the finish that makes you want to return for another sip. Excellent. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. 2023 - 2060

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (212), May 2014 95

The Chateau Coutet 2010 was a beauty from barrel with its payload of 154gms of residual sugar and sure enough, after a year in bottle it is one of the most compelling sweet wines in the vintage. It shows immense clarity on the nose, with the oak still a little prominent at the moment, but it will integrate with bottle age. The palate is well-balanced with a fine line of acidity. There is an engaging sense of tension here, real drive and mineralite towards the finish, like a cousin of Doisy-Daene but with a little more bravura. There is a sense of purpose about this 2010 Sauternes, with a persistent finish that keeps you coming back for more. Bravo! Drink now-2030+.

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (194), May 2011 93/95

The 2010 Chateau Coutet has 154-gms/litre residual sugar, one of the highest in Sauternes/Barsac. It is endowed with a delightful bouquet of freshly sliced mango, Tropicana and a touch of honey, with good definition and minerality. The palate is medium-bodied with very impressive balance and poise, and is slightly viscous in the mouth, with almond, lemon curd and a touch of orange peel. The finish is composed and long. The 2010 Coutet is very impressive for the vintage, although I suggest not quite reaching the stellar heights of the magnificent 2009.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (238), August 2018 95

The 2010 Coutet, a blend of 75% Sémillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle, is pale lemon-gold in color with a nose that explodes with decadent pineapple, mango and lemon meringue pie notes with touches of acacia honey, candle wax and yuzu. Full-on opulent in the mouth, the palate sings with concentrated citrus and tropical fruit layers, finishing long and honeyed. This has 160 grams per liter of residual sugar. Drink Date 2018 - 2040
