Tasting notes

Neal Martin, vinous.com, February 2024 94

The 2007 Coutet has a quintessential Barsac nose with barley sugar and light chlorophyll scents filtering through the honeyed fruit. The palate is beautifully balanced and powerful. Layers of botrytised fruit, marmalade and tangerine come to the fore with great focus and delineation on the finish. This is an outstanding Coutet that will give years of drinking pleasure. Tasted from an ex-château bottle served at the estate. Drink 2021-2045.

James Suckling, WineSpectator.com, April 2008 91/94

Thick and concentrated, with loads of tropical fruit, such as mango and papaya. Full, lively and spicy, with plenty of botrytis and a long finish. Wonderful potential. 91-94

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2008 18.5

Mid honeyed gold. Strong botrytis. Massive richness, real tingle factor and excitement. Long and very thorough and intriguing. Lots of development still to come. Still chewy. Energetic. Long

Derek Smedley MW, April 2008 90/95

The racy nose is packed with fragrant fruit citrus backed by candied peel. The richness of the fruit gives weight and depth on the palate, fleshy peach is underpinned by apricot and given richness by the candied orange peel. The sweetness is balanced by freshness all adding to the complexity. 2016-2035.

This property has been producing some outstanding wines in recent vintages. The sample was cloudy and not showing much on the nose, but there is a lot of concentration and candied fruit. Not as fresh as expected. Should move up. 4 stars.

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (199), February 2012 94

Tasted single blind against its peers. The Chateau Coutet 2007 has a very intense bouquet with lemon curd and orange blossom mixed with clear honey. There is impressive precision here, almost crystalline. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine viscous entry, great weight and intensity with racy acidity. There is also much tension cutting through the layers of viscous fruit on the sorbet-like finish. This is a typical Coutet through and through and it should age effortlessly over 20-30 years.

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (188), April 2010 94

This has a relatively simple but crisp nose with dried honey, apricot, quince and a touch of almond. The palate is well balanced with good acidity and botrytis, pure, quite linear with white peach, pear, a touch of mandarin and citrus acidity cutting through its viscous texture towards the finish. It improves the more it remains in the mouth, the nose seeming to absorb energy, the palate becoming ever more "pixilated". This is another intellectual Sauternes that should age beautifully. Drink 2012-2030+

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (176), May 2008 93/95

A fresh, lively, zest nose with touches of honey, frangipane and mango. The palate is very fresh and well-defined, viscous honeyed fruits, vibrant acidity and so much freshness on the finish. Harmonious and sophisticated, this is a lovely Coutet with long-term potential. Sublime. Drink 2010-2030. Tasted April 2008
