Clos de Vougeot, Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair 2021

The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has quite a forward, slightly bretty nose with pleasant red fruit underneath. However, it does miss some delineation. The veil of oak needs to be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, slightly confit-like entry. Sour cherry and orange rind combine nicely and it is quite linear on the finish. Whilst not the final word in complexity, there is clearly some high-quality fruit and it just needs two or three years to cohere. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2027-2040)

Bright crimson in colour, with depth. A fine volume of red berry fruit on the nose too, alongside a manageable degree of reduction. Certainly, there is grand cru intensity, with raspberry and ripe redcurrant, and it will take a while yet for all the fruit to emerge. All quite typical for Clos Vougeot. There is a slight reductive character underlying.
