Tasting notes

Allen Meadows, Burghound.com, October 2015 95

This is very clearly still on the way up as the cool and ultra-pure nose remains relatively primary with only a touch of secondary development in evidence on the earthy, spicy and elegant dark berry fruit aromas. There is outstanding density to the big-bodied flavors that possess robust power and obvious muscularity all wrapped in a firm, focused and moderately austere finish that goes on and on. I particularly like the inner mouth perfume and while this is certainly a forceful, intense wine, it's not a bruiser as there is lovely balance. In sum, this is a great effort that will, for my taste in any event, need another 7 to 10 years of cellar time to arrive at its apogee. Drink 2022+

Pierre-Antoine Rovani, Wine Advocate (153), June 2004 94/96

Pine resin, sweet blackberries, and dark cherries are found in the nose of the 2002 Chambertin. Medium-bodied, its silky-textured character offers spice box, black raspberry, cherry, cassis, and notes of fresh herbs. This pure, noble, suave wine also possesses a prolonged, seamless finish that is loaded with additional layers of fruit. Corinne Rousseau stated that “it will age forever.” Projected maturity: 2008-2020.

Allen Meadows, Burghound.com (13), January 2004 92/95

This too is incredibly complex but the essential character of the wine is quite different as the Bèze is built more along the lines of elegance and finesse in 2002 whereas the Chambertin is classic in style with its robust power and obvious muscularity all wrapped in prominent but fine tannins. I particularly like the inner mouth perfume here and while this is certainly a forceful, intense wine, it's not a bruiser as there is excellent precision and purity of expression here as well plus it enjoys exceptional balance as well. A great effort.
