Tasting notes

Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book (4), December 2003 91

As most recent vintages have, the 1998 exhibits flamboyant, obvious new oak, but unlike other years, there is more concentration, power, and depth behind the vanilla toasty notes. Full-bodied, dense, and chewy, with copious peppery, herb-tinged, red currant, black currant, and blackberry fruit, this is a lush, generously-endowed offering with a lightly tannic finish. Anticipated maturity: now-2016. Last tasted, 3/02

Neal Martin, vinous.com, April 2018 91

The 1998 Beau-Séjour Bécot was picked between 29 September and 5 October. The colour is more youthful than either the 1995 or 1996 and the nose certainly more vibrant: cranberry and strawberry fruit, fine purity and well integrated oak. There is a sense of purpose about these aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fine cohesion and plenty of melted red berry fruit laced with tobacco, allspice and white pepper. In the context of this vertical, I see this 1998 as a benchmark – not the greatest ever, but a sign of things to come. Tasted at the château.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, March 2006 16+

Substantial, rich, warm nose. Sweet quite refined palate. Lots of stuffing and flattering yet with good structure. Not nearly at full potential though a very confident mouthful of ripe fruit. Slightly tart.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (134), April 2001 91

The 1998 exhibits flamboyant, obvious new oak, but unlike other years, there is more concentration, power, and depth behind the vanillin/pain grille notes. Full-bodied, dense, and chewy, with copious peppery, herb-tinged, red currant, black currant, and blackberry fruit, this is a lush, generously-endowed offering with a lightly tannic finish. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2016.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (128), April 2000 92/94

This is the finest Beau-Sejour-Becot I have ever tasted. A saturated purple color is followed by a sumptuous nose redolent with smoked herbs, new oak, cherry liqueur, roasted coffee, chocolate, and copious black fruits. Full-bodied and huge, with massive concentration, excellent balance, and moderate tannin in the structured, rich, powerful finish, this 1998 will be at its finest between 2003-2017.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (122), April 1999 91/93

This 1998's ostentatious, nearly over the top style will have its detractors, but, if wine is a beverage of pleasure, Beau-Sejour-Becot delivers the goods. The color is a saturated ruby/purple. The wine is lavishly oaked, jammy, and rich, with oodles of glycerin and extract, medium to full body, and moderately aggressive tannin in the blockbuster finish. This concentrated, rich offering will become more civilized with 3-5 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2017.
