Tasting notes

Neal Martin, vinous.com, August 2020 89+

The 2016 Poujeaux has a pretty, floral bouquet that reveals a light marine influence in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a potent spicy entry, plenty of black pepper and tobacco and a boisterous finish. A little uncouth but still enjoyable. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. 2022 - 2035

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, February 2019 92

Blackberry, blueberry and orange-peel aromas follow through to a full body with a solid core of fruit and a fresh, tangy finish. The hazelnut and walnut undertones add to the complexity. Drink in 2021 and onwards.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (Interim En), November 2018 89

Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Poujeaux is scented of fried herbs, tar and earth with baked plums and a waft of rocks. The palate is medium-bodied, firm, chewy and herbal. Drink 2019-2029.

Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com, February 2019 90

An outstanding Moulis made with consulting help from Stéphane Derenoncourt, the 2016 Château Poujeaux offers up a rock star, medium to full-bodied, layered profile as well as pretty notes of ripe black fruits, graphite, violets, and background oak. Give this sleeper 2-3 years of bottle age and it will impress for a decade or more. Drink 2022-2032.

Neal Martin, vinous.com (Jan 2019), January 2019 90

The 2016 Poujeaux has a tightly knit bouquet of black fruit infused with melted chocolate and hinting at mint and sage. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, good depth and vigor, dovetailing into a slightly savory finish. I just have a nagging feeling that this could have been better. More ambition, please! Drink 2022-2035.
