Here too moderate wood toast suffuses the liqueur-like aromas of black cherry, earth, violet and a whiff of the sauvage. There is outstanding intensity to the sleek and even more mineral-driven medium weight flavors that are shaped by relatively refined but very firm tannins on the youthfully austere, serious and again, built-to-age finale. This is textbook Fontenys that combines power with elegance.

Reminiscent of the domaine's excellent 2010, the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Fontenys displays a reserved bouquet of cassis, wild plums, licorice, candied peel, espresso roast and grilled meats, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and layered palate, with tangy acids, a concentrated core of fruit and rich structuring tannins, concluding with a bright finish. 2024 - 2040
