Gevrey Chambertin Clos Saint Jacques, Louis Jadot 2015

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques is one of the more reticent cuvées in the Jadot portfolio in the 2015 vintage, but its superb quality is more than apparent. Notes of red and black cherries, dark berries, wood smoke and peony mingle in a lovely bouquet, introducing a full-bodied, multidimensional wine with excellent depth, concentration and energy, structured around a firm chassis of tannin which is already beginning to assert itself and which will need a good decade in the cellar to melt away. Built for the long haul, this is an excellent Clos Saint-Jacques, but one which will really demand patience from its purchasers. Drink 2027-2050.

Interestingly, and particularly so given the generally high level of expressiveness of many of the prior wines, this is all but mute and requires aggressive swirling to reveal ripe yet elegant and airy aromas of red currant, spice, smoke, wet stone and a hint of underbrush. There is evident refinement to the mineral-driven and caressing medium-bodied flavors that exhibit lovely delineation on the mildly austere, firm and beautifully well-balanced and lingering finale. This is very classy with a Zen-like sense of harmony.

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has a very composed and detailed bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, a subtle floral note of rose petal and iris. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and a fine silver bead of acidity. It feels quite linear at the moment, strict and you could say "well behaved," though there is superb depth towards the velvety finish and a persistent minerally aftertaste. This is a very composed, complex Clos Saint-Jacques.

There’s a very seamless feel here. Aromas of wild red cherries and gentle, sappy sous bois, as well as fresh mushrooms and spicy, sweet-smelling earth and lightly smoky notes. The palate delivers a very long, powerful and weighty impression. Shows great depth and real power. Finishes with real prowess. Try from 2022. It will age very well.
