Tasting notes

Neal Martin, vinous.com, March 2019 97

The 2009 Rieussec has long been a favourite of mine. It is a little deeper in colour than its peers. This is rich and powerful with clear honey, acacia, orange blossom and quince aromas, just a hint of crème caramel in the background. The palate is very well balanced with another superb line of acidity. Very pure and focused with captivating tension on the finish, the tongue tingling with Szechuan peppers on the aftertaste. Wonderful. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Drink 2020 - 2060.

James Suckling, WineSpectator.com, April 2010 92/95

Lemon peel and pear tart on the nose. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with good acidity, lemon meringue flavors and a spicy finish.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (March 2019), March 2019 98

Pale to medium gold colored, the 2009 Rieussec sings of crème caramel, chopped nuts, baked apples and spiced pears with hints of jasmine, peach blossoms and beeswax. Full-bodied, rich and decadently creamy in the mouth, the multilayered palate is beautifully lifted with fantastic freshness. It has a very long finish offering a lasting impression of great elegance and finesse. Simply stunning. 2019-2050

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2010 18

Heavy and rich and wonderfully sumptuous. Great richness. Density and breadth. Still very chewy but there is lots here. Very rewarding. Date tasted 29th March 2010. Drink 2018-2036.

Derek Smedley MW, April 2010 93/97

The nose is fleshed out by ripe fruit, apricots, pears and fleshy yellow peaches. The lushness is balanced by lime and lemon freshness that gives a more elegant, racy feel on the mid palate and helps to bring out the Noble Rot spice that lurks towards the back. Drink 2022-2060.

Tim Atkin MW, April 2010 93

Punters who want to secure a rare case of Château Lafite are often required to purchase one or more cases of Rieussec, too. This won't be a hardship in 2009, because the wine is very stylish, with flavours of pears and cinnamon, good acidity and plenty of sweetness (160 grams per litre). Not quite a superstar Sauternes, but certainly an impressive wine. 10+ years.

James Lawther MW, Decanter.com, April 2010 18

Massive, with great transformed level of alcohol, useful when the sugar content is so high too, a monument of a wine, but a wait of 10 years at least will be necessary to do justice to its majestic power.

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (205), February 2013 97

The team at Chateau Rieussec have conjured a stellar wine in 2009. There is a little reduction at first that fortunately blows away, revealing thickly layered scents of honey, Danish pastry and quince that appear to gain vigor with every passing sip. The palate is stunning: very viscous in the mouth with tangy grapefruit, honey and white peach. It is still primal, but the acidity is perfectly judged and there is a life-affirming sense of precision and tension towards the finish. Exceptional. Drink now-2045.

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (188), April 2010 95/97

The minerality and stoniness really comes through on the nose of this Rieussec, more than the 2007. The palate is very well balanced with superb acidity, real tension, steely with great precision with notes of apricot, white peach and honey on the beautifully defined finish. Probably the best Rieussec since the astounding 2001.
