Tasting notes

William Kelley, Wine Advocate, March 2025 92

Aromas of minty cassis, herbs and pencil shavings introduce the 2022 Siran, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and lively wine that's seamless and integrated. This is an especially strong effort for this estate. 2025 - 2042

Neal Martin, vinous.com, February 2025 93

The 2022 Siran, bottled in May 2024, offers brambly red fruit with touches of sous-bois, pressed flowers and cedar. It opens nicely in the glass with suggestions of dark chocolate in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and accents of black pepper and clove. This wine surprisingly comes across a little Saint-Julien in style, and is somewhat austere for the first ten minutes. Then the fruit returns, as if playing peek-a-boo. Give this two or three years in bottle. 2028 - 2055

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, April 2023 95/96

Attractive berry fruit here with spices and orange peel undertones. Medium- to full-bodied, toned and steady with compact tannin structure. Deep. Long finish with stony minerality. Most structured yet fine Siran I have tasted for a long time.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Independent, May 2023 92/94+

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Siran rolls out with expressive notes of blackcurrant cordial, preserved plums, and stewed black cherries, followed by suggestions of sauteed herbs and forest floor. The medium to full-bodied palate is concentrated and intense, with approachable, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with an herbal lift.

Jane Anson, JaneAnson.com, March 2025 94

Great depth, well judged and balanced, plenty of character, crisp mint leaf, cassis, blueberry, cocoa bean, espresso, this is seriously enjoyable, clear tannic frame and great ageing potential, ripe but measured, it's one to look out for and very easy to recommend. A classic 94 point Buy signal. 35% new French oak barrels, great stuff from Edouard Miailhe and winemaker Marjolaine Defrance. The label for 2022 is a tribute to Queen Elizabeth, for any royal fans out there...

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, May 2023 16.5

53% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot. Cask sample.Very dark crimson. Polished, mild nose with lots of mulberry fruit and some Margaux silkiness. Fine tannin and quite a bit of apparent acidity on the finish. Not flashy but nicely balanced. On the basis of past history, I’d expect this to last quite a while. 14%Drink 2028– 2045

William Kelley, Wine Advocate, April 2023 90/92

The 2022 Siran is a real success, bursting with aromas of sweet berries, cassis, licorice and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy palate. This charming, succulent Margaux is sure to be one of the commune's better value propositions.

Neal Martin, vinous.com, May 2023 92/94

The 2022 Siran was picked 13 to 30 September at 36hL/ha, matured in 35% new oak for a planned 12 months. It takes a little time cohering in the glass, a mixture of red and black fruit intermingling with cedar and pressed flowers. It is comparatively understated for the vintage, but that's a facet that I like and it delivers real freshness. The palate is medium-bodied and very harmonious, with finely-knit tannins, and a pleasant spiciness that unfolds with aeration (black pepper and clove). There's a build in the mouth allied with sapidity that urges you back for another sip. Siran has been on an upswing under Edouard Miailhe in recent vintages. The swing continues. 2029-2060

Jane Anson, JaneAnson.com, May 2023 94

A brilliant quality Siran, full of depth and grip, slate-textured tannins to provide contrast to the ripe black fruits, and help draw out of the nuance in the rich flavours. Has juice and pleasure, and is an enjoyable and quietly confident wine in a year where excess was the easier route. Ageing in 35% new French oak barrels. One to look out for, from the Miaihle family.
