Tasting notes

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, January 2022 94

A chewy, structured red with blackberry, chocolate and some walnut and bark. It’s full-bodied and solid with lots of fruit and tannins. Second wine of Calon Segur. Needs five or six years to soften. Try after 2026.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Independent, May 2022 92

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Le Marquis de Calon Segur rolls out effortlessly with exuberant notes of baked black cherries, warm cassis, and blueberry compote, plus hints of unsmoked cigars, dried roses, and fragrant earth. Full-bodied and concentrated, the palate has velvety tannins and is packed with perfumed fruit, finishing long and lively.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, February 2023 16.5

Tasted blind. Weak rim. Gentle nose and quite a sweet start. Dry finish. Easy to like, but with a little alcohol on the end. 15%Drink 2027– 2040

Neal Martin, vinous.com (Southwold), February 2023 90

The 2019 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur does not quite possess the complexity of the 2019 Capbern on the nose, more red fruit here, earthier in style. The palate is medium-bodied with graphite infused black fruit, moderate depth, a touch of abrasiveness towards the finish that should be abraded with time. There is something uncompromising here...but I like that. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Drink 2026-2046.

Neal Martin, vinous.com, February 2022 91

The 2019 Marquis de Terme, matured in 50% new oak, has an intense bouquet of black cherries, boysenberry and melted tar, gaining precision with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and sappy with fine delineation, gently building to a precise, licorice-tinged finish. Fine, but I found one bottle a little conservative and another more generous and outgoing. 2024 - 2040

Neal Martin, vinous.com, June 2020 91/93

The 2019 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur comes sprinting out of the blocks on the nose with powerful blackberry, iodine and pressed iris petals, a little "in ya face" at first but with aeration develops commendable cohesion. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit laced with pencil lead, very harmonious with a precise and persistent finish. This is surely the best second label from Calon Ségur to date.
