Tasting notes

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, December 2025 96

A beautiful, lively, zesty and vibrant chardonnay. Apples, dried pears, baking spices, warm herbs and dried lemon zest on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with plenty of volume and crisp acidity. The palate is bright, precise and vertical, with impeccable texture and a long, succulent, minerally finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Rebecca Gibb MW, vinous.com, December 2024 94

The 2023 Chardonnay Lion's Tooth is young and tightly wound, with a clarity of cool climate fruit. While there's a sense of tenderness, a feature of dry whites grown on chalky soils, it is bone dry with a sense of savory forcefulness. Citrus, apple and a distinct salinity shine with subtle oak-derived hazelnut characters. 2026 - 2036

Stephen Wong, RealReview.com, February 2026 96

An expressive and round chardonnay with aromas of vanilla, roasted hazelnuts and fresh butter. Layered and generous without being heavy, it displays mouth-filling richness with immediate complexity. The palate is flavoursome, tangy and long, showing superb depth alongside very fresh acidity. Though long and concentrated, it remains light and saline, elegant and racy on its feet. There's beautiful precision and clarity throughout, finishing with lime cordial notes. Light-bodied yet intense and perfumed. Note: These results see both Field of Fire and Lion’s Tooth Chardonnay in the Top 10 New Zealand Chardonnay for the 2023 vintage – the other wines in the list (Te Mata Estate Eston, Villa Maria Taylors Pass, Felton Road Block 6, Dry River, Neudorf Home Block) have also all scored 96 Points .. so let’s call it first equal for all!!!
