Tasting notes

William Kelley, Wine Advocate, April 2023 93

A broad, ripe, expressive wine, the 2020 Enclos Tourmaline offers up aromas of cherries and plums mingled with licorice and toasty new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, expansive, fleshy palate. This is a rich, broad-shouldered wine from holdings on the plateau respectively located between Le Pin and Trotanoy, opposite Clinet, and opposite the château of La Fleur-Pétrus. 2025 - 2040

Neal Martin, vinous.com, November 2024 92

The 2020 L'Enclos Tourmaline has a potent nose with generous blackberry and boysenberry fruit. It verges on overripeness but just about manages to retain delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. It's fine-boned but lacks a bit of weight in the middle, becoming linear and conservative toward the finish. That said, I appreciate its classical bent. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. 2027 - 2043

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, May 2021 95/97

A solid, tight red with blackberries, black olives and hints of brown sugar and walnuts. Full and tight with fine, persistent tannins. Tight and focused.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (79), May 2021 94/96

The 2020 Enclos Tourmaline is made from 100% Merlot, harvested on the 16th of September, aging in 100% new French oak barriques. It weighs in with an alcohol of 14.7% and a pH of 3.67. Revealing a very deep purple-black color, it has a profound nose of blackberry pie, blueberry compote and plum preserves, with underlying suggestions of licorice, espresso, black olives and crushed rocks. The rich, full-bodied palate is jam-packed with fragrant black fruit preserves, framed by velvety tannins and a fantastic line of freshness, finishing with great length and wonderful purity. Drink 2024-2048.

Jane Anson, Decanter.com, May 2021 92

A consistent estate, this has powerful dark fruits - damson and bilberry, good spice and plenty of length. Enjoyable stuff from Peter Kwok's Vignoble K.Drinking Window 2025 - 2044

Neal Martin, vinous.com, February 2023 92+

The 2020 Enclos Tourmaline has an opulent bouquet with cassis, blueberry and violet scents, perhaps just missing the delineation of some of the top tier Pomerols. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, pure black fruit laced with rosemary and truffle, white pepper emerging towards the finish that is slightly candied. Thoroughly enjoyable, but it needs 4-5 years in bottle.

Neal Martin, vinous.com, May 2021 94/96

The 2020 Enclos Tourmaline was picked on September 16 at 32hl/ha and matured entirely in new oak. It has a chiseled bouquet, beautifully defined and focused, unfurling gradually to reveal blackberry, blueberry, crushed rock and light violet aromas. There is a sense of "weightlessness" about these aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very sapid and saline, a Pomerol that is keen to get the juices flowing even at this early stage. This has wonderful poise and precision. Perhaps one of the best Enclos Tourmaline vintages that I have tasted since its inception. Highly recommended. Just 2,400 bottles produced. 2027 - 2052.
