Tasting notes

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, January 2020 96

This is a very rich white with sliced, dried mango and apple, as well as cooked apples, candle wax and light vanilla. Full-bodied, layered and intense. Big, rich wine, yet remaining fresh and vivid. Needs time to come together. A blend of 80% sauvignon blanc and 20% semillon. but the semillon really marks the wine. Searing acidity, too. Try after 2021.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (March 2020), March 2020 94

A blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon, the 2017 Blanc comes sailing out of the glass with bold notes of white peaches, fresh pineapple, lemon tart and lime cordial plus suggestions of honeysuckle, beeswax and musk perfume with a touch of wild sage. Medium-bodied and with a beautiful silky texture, the palate is packed with vibrant stone fruit and tropical fruit flavors, sporting a racy line of freshness, and it finishes long with an invigorating lift. 2020 - 2034

Neal Martin, vinous.com, February 2020 91

The 2017 Cos d’Estournel Blanc has a very attractive bouquet that offers fresh lime, apricot blossom and subtle pineapple scents that I neatly integrated with the oak. The palate is well balanced with a harmonious entry and fine acidity, plenty of lime and green apple notes mixed with caramelised pear. The palate perhaps does not quite match the attractiveness on the aromatics, but will still drink well for the next 10 years. 2019-2029.

Jane Anson, Decanter.com, April 2018 95

This is totally delicious, the best Cos white for many years. There's excellent shape and form through the palate, with a huge intensity of flavour. This has a slatey lick of minerality that almost knocks you off your feet but ends up just making you want more. Flavours of apricot, white pear, tight rosemary and grilled almonds are joined by a succulent structure, austere in all the right places. Good ageing potential. Harvested 5-22 September. 3.17pH. 6% new oak.Drinking Window 2018 - 2030

Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2017 17

The oak and the fruit are entwined on the nose to give finesse, with both citrus and mealy oak creaminess. Smells beautifully creamy and yet utterly fresh with just a suggestion of clementine. Mouth-filling freshness, that creamy texture and a long, pink-grapefruit finish. Rich and concentrated but not at all heavy, incredibly persistent. So fresh on the finish, mouth-watering and with a maritime freshness. 12.9%Drink 2019-2027

Derek Smedley MW, DerekSmedleyMW.co.uk, April 2018 89/92

Citrus and apple the nose is fresh the start of the palate crisp and crunchy. There is mid depth ripe greengage more breadth of flavour the back-palate light and bright the finish is firm and fresh. 2020-27

Matthew Jukes, Matthew Jukes' Blog, April 2018 17.5

I like this a lot. There is a freshness here which can be seen in the reds, too, and it is a successful wine for Cos. Clean, lemony, smooth and with a little touch of almond essence, this is a delightful wine. It is certainly my favourite vintage to date.

Neal Martin, vinous.com, May 2018 89/91

The 2017 Cos d’Estournel Blanc is aged in just 6% new oak, the pH coming in at a lip-smacking 3.17. It was picked from 5 September until 22 September. It has a striking bouquet of citrus fruit, white peach and yellow flowers, hints of melted candle wax in the background imparted by the Sémillon. The palate is well balanced with notes of lime cordial, citrus peel, a touch of mango and just the right amount of salinity that pricks up the finish. I appreciate its weight and body, perhaps not the most cerebral dry white Bordeaux, but certainly a delicious wine that will be difficult to resist one bottle. This will mature in barrel until next July, an élevage of around ten months in total. Drink 2020-2030.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, April 2018 96/97

This is going to be a wonderful Cos white with green mangoes, sliced apples and crushed-stone character. Green kiwis, too. Full-bodied and very rich with tension and brightness. Fantastic length. 80% sauvignon blanc and 20% semillon.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (236), April 2018 90/92

Cos d'Estournel started making this white wine in 2005 from the Goulée vineyard. The 2017 Blanc is composed of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon. It gives beautiful, expressive grapefruit, ripe peach and passion fruit notes with touches of baker’s yeast, powdered ginger, nutmeg and beeswax. Medium-bodied, vibrant, racy and with great finesse, it has a very long citrus and tropical fruit-laced finish. With plenty of structure and intensity, it should age reasonably well.
