Tasting notes

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, January 2022 93

Notes of ripe blueberries and blackberries with hints of violets, sweet licorice, bark and wet earth. Full-bodied, polished and silky with notes of crushed stones. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Try from 2025.

Producer's Note, January 2022

Wine has been made on the site of Château Thénac for over 900 years - first by Benedictine monks and then, after their priory was demolished, it recommenced in 1621. 400 years later, we decided to celebrate this rich history by creating a special release, only available in a limited number of magnums. This cuvee is made from just two plots - one Merlot, one Cabernet Sauvignon - both on the plateau surrounding our Château. The grapes are selected and lovingly crafted in our state-of-the-art cellars into a rich, complex yet impeccably balanced wine. For this 2019 vintage - the 400th anniversary - we have partnered with outstanding young artist Kathryn Maple. Kathryn was the first prize winner of the 2020 John Moores Painting Prize and produced this commission for Château Thénac that embraces her love for landscapes and her elegant use of colour, complementing the colours of the wine.
