Tasting notes

Neal Martin, vinous.com, March 2018 93

The 2014 Saint-Pierre has the most fruit-driven bouquet of the flight of Saint Julien wines with copious red cherries, boysenberry and fig-like scents. It certainly is the one with the immediate appeal rather than intrinsic complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, quite solid tannin that provide good backbone to support the weight of fruit. There is a lot of extraction here but everything remains nicely proportioned and there is more than enough freshness towards the finish. This should not be under-estimated and it will provide long-term drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. 2020 - 2045

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, February 2017 92

Sweet, moderately oaky nose with much chocolate and a hint of something vegetal in the background from the cab. Generous ripe fruit and some lovely warm dry tannins behind it. Already very harmonious on the rather long finish. Give it a couple of years to come together.

Jane Anson, JaneAnson.com, February 2022 94

This vintage always benefits in a vertical from coming after the 2013, but no question that this is a excellent wine with dark fleshy fruits and slate-textured tannins. Confident powerful, nuanced, rich, balanced. A signature St Julien vintage, with smoked cigar box from the opening notes, balanced but expands and rises from the mid palate onwards. 50% new oak.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, February 2018 17

Tasted blind. Very dark crimson. Pure pleasure on the nose. Polished savoury leather. Quite advanced but glossy and fun for the medium term. Very slightly bitter on the end.Drink 2022-2036

James Molesworth, WineSpectator.com, February 2017 91

Stylish up front, with singed vanilla and sandalwood notes framing the core of lightly mulled plum and raspberry fruit. The brambly grip on the back end is well-embedded thanks to the fleshy finish. Best from 2019 through 2028. 5,000 cases made.

Derek Smedley MW, April 2015 87/91

Depth the nose has a brooding richness and the start of the palate has sweetness. Under the sweet fruit bramble and bilberry refresh the tannins are obvious but fine and well handled then it fills out at the back the finish sweet and black fruited. 2026-40

Tim Atkin MW, timatkin.com, April 2015 92

This bijou fourth growth always makes great value reds. The 2014 is firmer than stablemate Château Gloria, with compact, hunkered down tannins, plenty of aromatic oak and rich, concentrated black fruits. The latest in a long line of very well made wines.

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (Interim En), April 2017 92

The 2014 Saint-Pierre 2014 was one of the surprises of the Saint Julien appellation, a wine that has blossomed throughout its élevage and in bottle to the point where it has overtaken its stablemate, the 2014 Château Gloria. It has a more floral bouquet: vibrant and energetic with fine mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied, a silver bead of acidity, energetic and intense with tobacco and graphite on the finish. For me, the Saint-Pierre has the upper hand this year and it should give two decade's worth of drinking pleasure. Drink date 2019 - 2039

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (218), April 2015 88/90

The Château Saint-Pierre 2014 is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. There is a sense of harmony and focus on the nose: nicely defined with a touch of tobacco developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with good grip, quite saline and sappy in the mouth with spice on the structured finish. This is a more masculine Saint-Pierre, but it is well crafted with very good length. It just feels rather conservative compared to some of its Saint Julien siblings.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, March 2015 91/92

tight and very fine wine with a blueberry and blackcurrant character. Medium to full body, firm tannins. Polished Lagrange style here.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2015 17

Very deep glowing crimson. Very Cabernet on the nose with just a hint of oak. Cool and inky. Very restrained and almost timid but there is a good charge of fruit and tannins and no excess acidity. Just ripe enough but with attractive freshness. Focused and set for the long term. Ambitious and sinewy but restrained and backward now. Hums along and is especially impressive on the finish. Super correct. A little dry but not drying on the end at present.Drink 2024-2040
