Tasting notes

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (171), June 2007 93

A noble, complex nose of flowers, beef blood, black currants, licorice, and truffles reveals surprising evolution. The full-bodied, powerful wine exhibits stunning concentration, beautiful richness, sweet tannin, and a long finish. A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon (all from a bio-dynamically farmed vineyard), the 2004 Pavie-Macquin is another dazzling success from the brilliant winemaking team of Stephane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont.

James Suckling, Wine Spectator (April 05), April 2005 89/91

Silky and refined, with a solid core of ripe fruit and earthy character. Medium- to full-bodied, with a long finish. Shows some class.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com (April 05), April 2005 16.5

Extremely deep crimson. Strangely animal nose. A rather singed quality - very thick and concentrated with ripe tannins and notably dense colour. I'd like just a bit more acidity but the wine certainly delivers bang for the buck. Just a bit brutal. The maker [Stéphane Derenoncourt] has done his best to compensate for those marked tannins. Lots of work went into this wine. Drink 2010-20

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (165), June 2006 91/93

The dense purple-hued 2004 Pavie-Macquin possesses huge tannins, superb intensity, and aromas of pen ink intermixed with graphite, truffles, lead pencil, creme de cassis, and incense. Powerful, dense notes are infused with a striking minerality as well as a hint of licorice. This super-concentrated, rich St.-Emilion is meant for true as well as patient connoisseurs. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (158), April 2005 92/95

One of the vintage’s most impressive offerings, the 2004 Pavie-Macquin is a blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon from a bio-dynamically farmed vineyard. It offers an inky/purple color as well as a sumptuous perfume of creosote, blackberries, cassis, incense, and a balsamic character. This full-bodied, rich 2004 is one of the most concentrated wines of the vintage with more texture than most. A brilliant effort, it admirably displays the high quality of this estate as well as its noble terroir. A wine for true connoisseurs, it should be at its peak between 2011-2025+.
