Tasting notes

Yohan Castaing, RobertParker.com, October 2023 97

The 1934 d'Yquem is another refined, mature wine, evoking aromas of quince, baked mango, candied blood orange, orange peel, saffron and brown sugar. Medium-bodied and perfectly balanced, with an unexpectedly energetic mid-palate, it is layered and textural with a long, saline finish that remains racy at age 89.

Neal Martin, vinous.com, April 2022 95

The 1934 Yquem was an early picking according to Pierre Lurton, who opened this bottle at the estate. In fact, it was picked from 7 September after a strong rain on 31 August washed away heavy botrytis. Unusually, the botrytis kept on forming all the way to 4 October. Amber hue with green tints, it has superb delineation with Satsuma, barley sugar, saffron and a light algae-like aroma in the background. The palate is beautifully balanced with a vibrant entry, tangy bitter orange mixed with mango. White peach gently builds in the mouth towards quite a saline yet restrained finish. Beautiful, yet elegiac. Tasted at the château with Pierre Lurton and Sandrine Garbay. 2021-2036

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, February 2008 19

Dark tawny with greenish hints at the rim. Muted nose though hints of age. Quite dry by now but very tight and dynamic. Like a polished chestnut in taste somehow. Lively clean finish but not especially sweet. I think this is probably just past its best but very good. Wonderfully creamy.
