Rivesaltes, Domaine Sainte Barbe 1961

Sourced from the family's reserves, the 1961 is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Grenache Blanc and Gris. It has a strong oxidative nose with superb definition, quite like an old Verdelho Madeira with a touch of fieriness. The palate has a rancio quality with smoked walnut and a touch of black pepper. Again, there are touches of Verdelho here, with an elegant stem ginger infused finish that is nicely focused. This is old-fashioned Banyuls - and there is nothing wrong with that. Tasted December 2012.

1,000 bottles. 70% Grenache Noir, 30% Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris, grown on the outskirts of Perpignan. Very traditional. This was one of the best mass-market brands in the old days. Very lively and fresh and some raisins and dried citrus peel. Nice cool temperature. Very racy. Dry finish. 17%
